Assisted living or retirement community -- Which is right for your needs? Before selling your property, you should have an idea of what kind of community will best suite your needs. This factor is greatly determined by your physical and medical needs; level of care; home maintenance; location and accessibility; social and emotional needs; financial needs.
Assisted Living
Assisted living facilities offer rooms or apartment-style accommodations and, often, social activities. Meals are provided in a shared dining room. Staff is available around-the-clock to assist with care needs such as bathing, grooming, eating or using the toilet, and care is arranged as needed by the individual. Medical staff may be on-site or on call. The monthly charge for assisted living is determined by how much care a person requires and varies widely throughout the U.S. Some assisted living facilities are dedicated to or include a separate wing for those with Alzheimer's disease or other memory impairments. These "dementia care" or "memory care" units offer a special security-protected environment, and social and other activities designed for the abilities of the residents.

There are 971 assisted living facilities in Georgia and more than 30,6000 in the U.S. The average cost of assisted living in Georgia on a monthly bases is $2,880 monthly per person. In general, private health insurance does not cover assisted living.

Funding for assisted living in Georgia is mostly private and paid for by the person who wishes to live in the facility or by their family. Some Medicare Advantage, and most long-term care insurance plans, cover assisted living costs, but again, it varies greatly by plan. In general, long-term care insurance covers assisted living costs. The specifics depend on your policy and provider, but long-term care insurance is specifically designed to cover the costs associated with aging or chronic disability. Communities that provide personal services to less than 25 residents are called Personal Care Homes while communities that serve more than 25 residents are called Assisted Living Communities.

Retirement Community
Senior independent lifestyle living is simply any housing arrangement designed exclusively for seniors, generally those aged 55 and over.
Georgia retirement communities offer plenty of differences from other senior care centers. Retirement communities are oriented towards seniors who want to remain independent throughout their golden years. The community staff only provides maintenance, upkeep and housekeeping functions for senior residences while providing 24-hour emergency assistance for those in need. Residents live comfortably in single-level homes or apartment-style residences that are designed with seniors in mind. Residents also have free rein over their comings and goings. This gives seniors the ability to travel throughout the country or even around the world and come back to a caring and hassle-free environment.

These communities offer a carefree lifestyle and cater to seniors who are self-sufficient and who do not need hands-on care. Residents live in fully equipped private housing unit/apartment that typically includes a kitchenette, and sometimes a full kitchen. They may offer meal preparation, weekly housekeeping and laundry, house maintenance and repairs, trash removal and scheduled transportation for shopping and medical appointments. These communities usually offer a broad range of intellectual, physical and social activities. An independent living community may also be called a retirement community. Housing options include apartment-style living or free-standing cottages. For many communities, amenities include a club house, library, community center or fitness room. What distinguishes independent living communities from senior apartments or 55+ communities are the services provided.
