Black Interior Doors

When we first closed on this house, the interior doors were white and the door knobs were the old fashioned gold knobs. The door knobs were the first "project" I took on as a new first-time homeowner. I put the word 'projects' in quotation marks because when I consider a project, it is a task that, in my mind, takes many tools, takes days to complete, and takes a significant amount of money.

However, this project was small in terms of time, the amount of tools I did NOT need, and not a large sum of money in contrast to say, building a deck. As a veteran, I get a 10% discount at Home Depot and this indeed helped keep costs down when I purchased the door knobs; we have many doors in our house. The white doors made the aged bronze door knob "pop" and our new house appeared updated from such a small change. This was the starting point of when our house was slowly becoming "ours."

Painting the doors black came two years later. The linen closet door came off the hinges and my husband thought it best to buy a replacement door rather than fix the hinges (more than likely the door would come detached from the wall again anyway). Here was born the idea to paint the new linen door black. My husband wasn't so sure about it, but after the door was painted and installed, he liked the look. Little did he know the rest of the doors would eventually be painted the same color as the newly installed linen closet door. I couldn't stop looking at the door because in my opinion, it looked sharp. I then started looking at the other white doors in the house like, "you filthy old door, you're next." So, little by little I painted all the interior doors in the house, including the bi-fold laundry closet doors pictured below. With the black doors painted came the changing out the light switch plates; aged bronze was a great choice as it goes with the door knobs I purchased from Home Depot two years earlier. The matching switch plates and doors gave uniformity to our house. Black doors are timeless; I will not have to go through the hassle of changing out a trendy color. Trends come and go, but timeless is forever.
