Dead Space to Useful Space

What else have I done to our house to make it feel like our home? As stated in my last post in my Home Projects blog, I like functionality (and style). Our cup cabinet was starting to overflow, with drinkware falling out sometimes when the cabinet door is opened. One day I looked up at the dead space that sat between our spice cabinet and laundry closet doors. Suddenly, a light bulb appeared in a 'think' bubble above my head, reminiscent of a scene in the old school cartoons. The solution to the overcrowded drinkware cabinet? Evict my husband's coffee supplies to alleviate the clutter. Then was born the idea of building another set of floating shelves.

And so it happened, two days later, my husband had his own little coffee section in the kitchen. He likes the exposed wood at the bottom of the shelves, so I left them that way. His shelf, his style! I did not like to look of the white walls hiding behind the shelves so I painted them gray, initially. Then I remembered that we had left over grout and tile from a kitchen project we successfully tackled last September. The tile behind the coffee shelf helps the shelves tie in to the rest of the kitchen for a clean, uniform look and feel (as seen in the photo below). This project is a win-win for my husband and I; he gets his own little coffee space, and I have extra room in the drinkware cabinet --- and that extra space in the cabinet will be used for nothing. And it's okay not to have every space in your home filled with something. It's easier to breathe with less mammon. Indeed, sometimes less is more.
