Creating Family Traditions

Updated: Feb 2, 2023

Fall is my absolute favorite season.

Growing up in Michigan, I could always feel when the summer was about to gracefully bow out and make way for the autumn season. The leaves were the prettiest; they turned colors and stayed a while. The cool, crisp fall brought out the fall gear for all, and I knew it wouldn't be long before the holiday season rolled around. Living in Georgia, it takes a while for the fall season to actually start feeling like fall. Nonetheless, my children and I celebrate the change of the season by baking a homemade apple pie and cooking a crockpot full of flavorfully, seasoned chili with a side of Famous Dave's sweet cornbread baked in a cast iron skillet. Though it is still 80-something degrees when September 22nd rolls around, it's technically fall. On this "special" day, I go to the attic and break out my fall storage tub and decorate the mantle and the tree in front of the house with hay bales, "pumpkin patch" signs, and scare crows. One of the traditions that I've created with my family is decorating for fall and cooking homemade chili and homemade apple pie on the official first day of fall. My hope is that my children remember these times as they grow older, and pass them down to their children. My hope is that my grandchildren would come visit me and my husband on this day and help decorate and help cook and bake.

I Want to Know

Fall is my favorite season and I have made a tradition from it.

What are some family traditions that have been passed down to you? How do you implement them into your life? What are some things you wish to start as a tradition for your family?
